Fermentation

In microbiology, fermentation refers to the stages of cell multiplication and growth. This operation may have as objective the production of biomass or metabolites of interest. The electrotechnologies (CEP and DEHT) find applications related to the fermentation and to different stages of the separation operations of the microbial biomolecules.

The stimulation of the growth of S. cerevisiae by the application of a moderate intensity PEC has been demonstrated on a laboratory scale. This application aims to shorten the fermentation cycles and increase the productivity of the metabolites of interest.  When it comes to recovering molecules of interest, the use of a pulsed electric field would allow selective extraction of intracellular metabolites. An alternative to this soft technique is electric discharge in water that would allow intensive extraction of intracellular content.
